You can picture everyone around one long table: the people you would call first, a good meal and enough time to talk to each of them. But what does a small wedding actually cost? The four South African packages below put a 20-guest celebration between R42,000 and R58,000, with venue and food included. The next step is to match your guest list and date to a real package price, then leave room for the personal details that make it yours.

Four published packages for 20 and 40 guests

Package prices checked on 17 September 2026. These offers cover different celebrations, so read the inclusions alongside the price.

Venue 20 guests 40 guests The shape of the package
Laughing Forest, Elysium R42,000 R60,000 Ceremony space, private reception, three-course meal, staff, selected flowers and décor, and a honeymoon night with breakfast. VAT included.
Umthunzi Hotel, KZN South Coast R44,500 R60,000 Tweni Beach ceremony, hotel reception, three-course meal, specified décor and a honeymoon night. VAT included.
Eikenhof Estate, Stellenbosch R55,000 R72,000, calculated Venue, food, specified drinks, staff, an eight-hour DJ and coordinator, plus a Manor House night for ten people. VAT treatment is not stated.
The Lakeside, Pretoria East R58,000 R85,000 Venue, three-course meal, staff, cake, selected décor, toast drinks and a honeymoon night for two. VAT included.

Eikenhof's 40-person total is our calculation from its published R55,000 for 20 guests plus R850 for each additional person: R55,000 + (20 × R850) = R72,000. The package accommodates up to 40; that figure is not a separate advertised offer.

Choose the celebration before the cheapest line

If the ceremony on the sand is the picture you keep returning to, Umthunzi includes one at Tweni Beach. Laughing Forest's small-wedding brochure excludes a beach ceremony. They may share a coastline, but the lower price buys a different day.

For a gathering that carries on over breakfast, Eikenhof includes one night in the Manor House for ten people. Its DJ and coordinator also move two jobs into the package. Flowers and photography are optional extras, so the published figure is not a fully dressed wedding with a photographer waiting at the ceremony.

At The Lakeside, the cake and toast drinks are already accounted for. At Laughing Forest, selected flowers and décor are included, but personal bouquets, a cake, a DJ, a marriage officer, photography and video are excluded. Decide which of those you want before comparing the totals. A package that includes more of your actual wish list can be the better fit even when its first number is higher.

Let the date narrow the choice

Eikenhof's offer runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 May 2027, Sunday to Friday, excluding public holidays. The Lakeside's 2026/2027 offer is Monday to Thursday, with December, public holidays and the day before a public holiday excluded. Neither is the price of an unrestricted Saturday booking.

If a weekday suits your small group, those conditions may be easy to work around. If guests need to fly in or cannot take leave, choose the date first and find the package that supports it. Laughing Forest's applicable dates need confirming; Umthunzi's offer depends on availability and cannot be combined with other specials.

Half the guests does not mean half the bill

At Laughing Forest, 40 guests cost R60,000 and 20 cost R42,000. The smaller package saves R18,000, a 30% reduction for half the guest list. That is a meaningful saving, but the venue still has to host a ceremony and reception.

This is why a per-person comparison can distract from the number you actually pay. You are buying some things for each guest and some things for the day. A photographer may cover the same hours; a DJ may play the same evening. Choose the guest list you want, then compare whole packages at that size.

Leave room for the parts that feel like you

Start with the package and add only what it leaves out. At Umthunzi, that includes personal bouquets, buttonholes, petals and travel to the hotel; the couple also supplies ice and drinks for the beach drinks station. At Eikenhof, establish the VAT-inclusive total before deciding how much remains for flowers and photography. A honeymoon night in any package does not solve accommodation for all your guests.

Then make a deliberate choice about your remaining budget. Perhaps you want photographs of the entire afternoon, an outfit you love or generous flowers along that one table. A small wedding gives you a manageable setting for those decisions. It does not require you to recreate every feature of a much larger reception.
